Recently my husband (Patrick) and I vacationed in Mexico, and I am pretty sure a contributing factor to my holiday weight gain was Avocado. It is one of Mexico’s most abundant exports and was thought to be cultivated as early as 5,000 B.C. It is also known as “alligator pear” due to its shape and pebbled skin.
One avocado has about 200 calories and contains heart healthy unsaturated fat. It has a very large amount of dopamine, which is good for our muscles and nerve function, and is one of the few foods that contain all the essential amino acids.
Since it is so good for us, I don’t feel so guilty about loving it and having it as part of my diet. At home I usually add it to salads; sandwiches or make a dip which is very simple. I mash up a ripe avocado with a fork and add minced garlic, onion and a squeeze of lime – yum.
